Police and demonstrators clashed briefly on Thursday during a rally held by labor unions to mark a 24-hour general strike to protest austerity measures imposed under Greece’s international bailout.

The strike, which disrupted hospital, public transport, air traffic, tax offices and other operations, is the first major union action faced by the governing Syriza party, a left-wing group that vowed to end austerity but has had to accept creditors’ demands to keep the euro.
