Merpati Nusantara Airline employees to strike

The employees and crewmembers of state-owned PT Merpati Nusantara Airline are expected to go on strike on Sunday in protest at the planned replacement of the current board of directors.

Action coordinator Capt. Eman Supriatman told The Jakarta Post on Saturday that crewmembers and ground staff would refuse to work on any domestic or international routes until the government cancelled the planned replacement.

Threat of another pilots' stir in Air India looms large

The threat of another pilots' stir in Air India loomed large on Saturday, as one of its international flight was cancelled and two more delayed by over 16 hours after a section of pilots reported sick, apparently to protest rescheduling of Boeing 787 Dreamliner training programme.

While a flight to Singapore from Delhi (AI-380), scheduled at 0005 hours tomorrow, was cancelled, two services to New York (AI-101) and Toronto (AI-187), slated at 0145 hours and 0215 hours on Saturday, were delayed by over 16 hours, airport sources said.

"The flights are affected as the pilots did not report duty, citing health problems," an Air India official said, confirming the development. The protest is primarily being carried out by the pilots owing allegiance to the Indian Pilots Guild (IPG), as their leaders met through the day to prepare the future action plan.

Air India has ordered all rostered pilots to report to work by 6 this evening or face action, reports Press Trust of India (PTI). Five international Air India flights have been cancelled after 100 pilots called in sick. They say the management of the airline has not met timelines for promotions due to pilots. Another 200 pilots have threatened to join the strike. The management, according to PTI, says pilots may be forced to take medical tests if they fail to show up.

Kingfisher pilots threaten fresh strike from May 9

After keeping quiet for a month over the non-payment of salaries, a section of pilots of Kingfisher Airlines on Friday threatened not to report for duty from May 9, if the management failed to pay their January salaries.

The pilots have also served a June 30 deadline to the management to cleat all their salary arrears.

"We have decided not to fly from May 9 if the management does not pay at least our January salary before that. We also want a commitment from the management to clear the remaining dues in a phased manner by June 30," a senior Kingfisher Airlines pilot told this evening after a meeting in Delhi.

UPDATE MAY 12: Kingfisher Pilots Call Off Strike.

Kingfisher pilots called off their strike on Friday after the cash-strapped airlines' management promised them that they would clear all the outstanding salaries by May 15.

Bmibaby to be grounded

Bmibaby will be grounded from September, with some routes being stopped as early as next month, new owner IAG announced this afternoon.

The move by British Airways' parent will affect almost 500 staff.

IAG said it was still willing to sell the East Midlands-based budget airline, but it said recently it didn't expect to find a buyer for the carrier which is losing £25m a year.

IAG acquired bmibaby along with bmi from Lufthansa, but while bmi is being integrated into BA's mainstream operations, BA has no desire to run the budget airline.

Iberia hit by further strikes, flights cancelled

Iberia, the Spanish airline, cancelled 108 flights that were scheduled for Friday due to the strike called by STAVLA, a cabin crew trade union.

STAVLA went ahead with strikes although the SEPLA pilot union called off its own after the Spanish government chose an arbitrator to settle conflicts.

STAVLA members have decided to resume strikes in order to protest against the recent creation of low-cost airline Iberia Express.

Danish airline Cimber Sterling files for bankruptcy

Danish no-frills airline Cimber Sterling said on Thursday it has declared bankruptcy after its owners pulled financial support from the company.

"Because of this the board of directors has decided to declare the company bankrupt," Cimber Sterling said in a statement.

Cimber Sterling said passengers tickets were "worthless" and the airline's website said all flights were cancelled.

Chaos at border control deepens as UK immigration staff announce strike

Immigration staff have announced plans to strike next week in a move which will worsen the lengthy queues at Heathrow airport.

The Immigration Services Union, representing 4,500 border staff, will stage industrial action next Thursday May 10, as part of a national public sector strike over pensions. It will inform the Cabinet Office today of its plans.

The move could see hundreds of staff at Heathrow and other airports affected, adding to the delays already being endured at passport control.

UPDATE: The strike of Border Agency staff will take place from 2300 utc on the 9th May until 0100 utc of the 11th May.
This action will affect all UK airports, with the biggest impact expected at Heathrow, Gatwick and Manchester.
