Police and demonstrators clashed briefly on Thursday during a rally held by labor unions to mark a 24-hour general strike to protest austerity measures imposed under Greece’s international bailout.
The strike, which disrupted hospital, public transport, air traffic, tax offices and other operations, is the first major union action faced by the governing Syriza party, a left-wing group that vowed to end austerity but has had to accept creditors’ demands to keep the euro.

Airport workers staged a 24-hour strike Tuesday in Chile, grounding flights across the country and disrupting travel plans for an estimated 70,000 passengers.
"The situation at the airports is calm despite (the strike), which affects 100 percent of our airports, where departure operations have been cancelled," said the director general of the civil aviation authority, Maximiliano Larraechea.
He told journalists that airports would only handle arriving flights and emergency air traffic.

Spanish air traffic controllers will restart partial strikes in the coming weeks in protest against sanctions imposed by airport authorities on some staff, unions said on Monday.

Stansted airport security workers vote for fresh strike action
AIRPORT workers have voted to strike in a dispute over pay.
Up to 30 GMB union members who operate the security scanners at Stansted Airport will walk out at the weekend.
They want a 3 per cent pay rise and have rejected the company’s 1.5 per cent offer.
The first strike will take place on Saturday, September 12, from 3.45am until 23.59pm, the second will happen from 3.45am until 1pm on Sunday, September 13.
Lufthansa Pilots' union threatens renewed strikes.
Pilots union Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) threatened renewed strike action at Lufthansa , saying the German flag carrier had rejected its offer of concessions in a long-running dispute that has cost the airline hundreds of millions of euros.
Walkouts could start any time and could hit Lufthansa, its cargo arm Lufthansa Cargo and its budget carrier Germanwings, VC said in a statement on Wednesday.
Lufthansa denied it had turned down the offer and said it regretted that VC had declared the negotiations a failure. "We hope that talks can resume," a spokesman for Lufthansa said.

Air India pilots’ union to hold secret ballot on strike
State-run Air India Ltd may see turbulence ahead as one of its pilot unions is all set to roll out a secret ballot, starting on Monday, on whether to declare a strike at India’s oldest airline.
In a letter dated 28 August, the Indian Commercial Pilots’ Association (ICPA) told its members that “the central executive committee is of the strong judgement to declare strike”, adding that “a secret ballot is called for this purpose from 31 August to 6 September for a mandate as the Constitution of ICPA”.
Ben Gurion airport workers to strike Sunday morning
The Israel Airports Authority workers committee will hold a two hour strike at Ben Gurion airport on Sunday morning between 10 am and midday. Flights to and from the airport will be halted by the workers in an act of solidarity with Israel Broadcasting Authority employees who are threatened with layoffs.

Spanish airport handlers have called a strike targeting top tourist hotspots in the country.
Three unions representing the workers have announced four stoppages starting next Friday.
They'll take place at Madrid airport on September 4, 11, 18 and 25 from 4.30am to 7.30am and again from 7.30pm to 9.30pm.
Strikes have also been called at Barcelona, Alicante, Malaga and Majorca's Palma airport.
The strike will affect Menzies Barcelona-El Prat on 6th , 7th , 13th , 14th , 20th , 21st , 27th and 28th September, also in two time bands: from 10.00 to 12.00 and from 18.00 to 20.00 local time. In Málagaairport, the strike is called for dates 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th September between 8.00 and 12.00 hours and from 18.00 to 21.00; on 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th September the time bands affected are from 8.00 to 11.00 and from 20.00 to 23.00. InAlicante and Palma de Mallorca, the strike will be held on 7th , 9th , 14th , 16th , 21st , 23rd , 28th and 30th September, from 10.00 to 14.00 and from 16.00 to 20.00.

Anyone hoping to make the most of the end of the summer could face bank holiday misery after it was revealed staff at Stansted Airport are gearing up to strike over a pay dispute.
The workers, who operate the security scanners for luggage at Stansted airport, have rejected a 1.5 per cent pay rise offer.
The strikers, who are all members of the GMB union, intend to take industrial action on August 23 and on Bank Holiday Monday.
The industrial action on Sunday 23rd will take place from 3.45am to 1.00 pm and also on Monday 31 between 3.45am to 11.59pm.
Baggage handlers’ strike could cause chaos at Malaga airport
IBERIA baggage handlers at Malaga-Costa del Sol Airport have been called out on strike on August 21 and 28 by the UGT trade union.
Airlines which could be affected by the announced strikes include Iberia, Vueling, Tui Group, British Airways and Turkish Airlines.
The union explained that it felt forced to call the strike in protest as more than 10 per cent of staff were off sick and regardless of the hectic rhythm of work at the busy airport, nobody had been taken on to cover leaves.

Bali flights disrupted by erupting volcano again
Flights in and out of Bali run by Virgin Australia and Jetstar have been cancelled today due to further disruptions caused by a volcanic ash cloud.
While other services, for example with Emirates, KLM, Korean Air and national airline Garuda are still operating, Virgin said the eruption and unfavourable winds made for unsuitable flying conditions on Wednesday morning and urged customers in Bali not to travel to Denpasar airport until they had a confirmed rebooking.

Departures from Rome’s Fiumicino airport were suspended on Wednesday because of smoke from a firenearby.
The fire was burning in a forest of pine trees near the airport, pictures posted on the internet showed.
